About Rhodium Plating

Rhodium is a precious metal with a hardness far surpassing gold or silver. Rhodium electroplating is used in jewelry manufacture to provide a surface that will resist scratches and tarnish, and enhance luster. It is often used on white gold jewelry and, increasingly over the last several years, sterling silver jewelry as well.

It is important to note that rhodium plating does not last forever. With jewelry articles that are subject to a lot of wear, such as rings, the rhodium plating will eventually wear off after a couple of years of use. Rhodium plating on articles such as earrings, bracelets, pendants and necklaces can last indefinitely. If and when rhodium plating wears off, the jewelry article can easily and inexpensively be re-plated by a jeweler. Proper care is key to keeping rhodium plated jewelry in pristine condition.

As with most things, we must weigh the advantages and disadvantages. Rhodium plating a jewelry item makes it more resistant to scratching and tarnish, and it adds a luxurious luster. Is it worth the price? Today, most people appear to prefer rhodium plating, as demonstrated by its increase in popularity over the last several years.

In accordance with current jewelry trends, most of Amour & Baisers' sterling silver jewelry creations are plated with rhodium. In all such cases, "rhodium finish" will be indicated in the item description.
